Please technically support me

So, I recently bought a Western Digital *one terabyte* drive. Amazing. All that space. Do you remember floppy disks too? Wow.

Anyhow, I have a PC (yes, I know) and a Mac (woo). The external drive is attached to the former.

I’ve installed Syncback on the PC, and sorted out what to backup on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. That’s working finely and dandily.

However, I’m struggling to sort out the Mac. What I was planning to do was backup various folders to a shared drive on the PC called, wittily enough, FiC. However, FiC isn’t coming up as an option on either TimeMachine or Disk Utility, which both seem to be OSX’s in-built options for backing up.

Do you know a bit of software that automatically back up to a shared drive when the Mac is connected to it? Or is there another way of doing it? Some kind of automated macro thing? My *nix knowledge isn’t that hot. Nor, come to think of it, is my Mac knowledge.

<- n00b Thanks!

  1. Sorry but my knowlegde of mac software is poor at the easiest of times, I have no idea of how you can achieve this. But good luck, I’m sure there must be a way!

Now Mac hardware I could help you with – but software, not so much. Don’t be offended by the title, but if you can, pop over to your local bookstore and peruse “Mac for Dummies” (really – it was the best purchase – after the Macs, LOL – I ever made). I’d check out my copy for you, but I’m sure your operating system is much newer than mine (I’m still running Tiger – OS 10.4.11). You might also check out Apple’s site ( or Google a MUG (Mac User Group) that let’s you post questions about what you’re experiencing. I’m sure someone in the Mac universe has been there, done that before and would be willing to tell you how they did it…

I only have the Mac to contend with, but I just back up everything monthly on an external hard drive. The issue here, I think, is syncing it with the PC. Yeah – good luck with that!
